First Draft Of A Logo For Magazine

This is my first draft of what my magazine logo will look like. I have chosen to add the below freezing slogan because it goes with the season in which the magazine is being released which is in winter this is also why i have made the typography look shakey and it is also in a light blue to go with the weather and seasonal theme aswell.

Vibe Contents page

This contents page is from vibe magazine and uses the typical conventions of contents pages used in many magazines. For example one of the typical conventions of a contents page is they have number enabling the audience to be able to find the page they are looking for alot easier otherwise if they didnt have page numbers it would be alot more awkward for the audience to look for the page they want. Another typical convention which the vibe magazine contents page uses is picture this allows the audience to get an idea of what type of music magazine they are buying as the pictures featured are usually of artists which are well known to a certain type of genre allowing the audience to make a straight distinguised link between the featured artists pictures and the type of magazine they are reading.
However this contents page goes against the typical contents page for one main reason the fact that it says contents page 3/3 suggest that 2 more contents pages were printed in order to cater to diffrent types of artists to attract more of a variety of diffrent audiences which is a good idea as they are more likely to have more readers if they are projecting diffrent images by printing diffrent contents pages and also diffrent front pages as seen on one of my analysis of the front pages before they also promote there website in the contents page allowing the audience to consume their product in diffrent ways to suit them which is more likely to be more appealing to the audience as they have more freedom of choice. The contents page address the audience directly as it seems almost as it is talking to the audience for example it says 'chris rock is back' suggesting that you are telling someone that he is back therefore making the magazine seem as it is addressing you directly which is going to have more of a sucessful impact as it makes the reader feel more involved with the magazine and it also makes it seem more personal.

Contents Page Analysis (50 Cent)

This contents page is taken from the magazine 'in the mix' and has various typical conventions of what you would expect to see on a typical contents page. One of the typical conventions on a contents page are page numbers and this is also a way in which i can tell this is a contents page as it has sub-titles to in form the reader of what else is featured within the magazine and then it has page numbers to enable the audience to be able to find the topic they are looking for quick and easy aswell the subtitles can also inform the reader as to what type of magazine it is as the titles and artists featured within those titles are usually related to the type of music magazine the audience are reading.Another convention usually found on contents pages and is also found on this one is a picture or pictures in the case of other contents pages. The picture is usually of a featured artist in this case 50 cent who is featured on one of the pages within the magazine and this can also give the audience an indication as to what type of magazine it is through the artists found on the contents page so through the use of 50 cent this would indicate that the magazine is either a Hip/hop magazine or a Rap.
However it is arguable that the magazine is going against the typical stereotype for example it has the issue number inside on the contents page when it is usually found on the front cover of the magazine to inform the reader what issue number it is however if it was left on the inside of the magazine on the contents page this could become annoying to the reader as they may not be able to find out what issue number it is affecting whether or not they purchase this magazine and if this is the same for other members which the magazine is aiming at it could really affect their sales.

Busta Rhymes The Source

The Source is a United States-based, monthly full-color magazine covering Hip-hop, politics, and Culture, founded in 1988. I can tell that this magazine specializes in Hip-Hop music from underneath the title of the magazine it tells but also the magazine isnt just focused on music it also involved with political issues such a one of the selling lines which states 'Legal Marijuana : the stimulus debate it also focuses on culture. I am able to distinguish this is a Hip-Hop magazine also from the artist featured on the front which is Busta Rhymes who is a well known Hip-Hop/ Rap artist. From the front of the magazine i can tell that the magazine is mainly aimed towards men due to the image which Busta Rhymes is portraying for example the badman image of money, bling which is mainly associated with sucess because with money comes sucess and smoking seems like the thing which men are more likely to be interested in rather than women.
Another way in which i can tell the magazine is aimed more towards men than women is through the use of the colour scheme for example the fact that the main image is of Busta Rhymes holding money and the fact that the magazine colour scheme is green would suggest that it is money orientated and aimed mainly towards men than women also the fact that one of the subtitles is 'Legal marijuana:the stimulus debate' this would also suggest the magazine is more likely to be aimed towards men than women as it is more likely to be men that smoke marijuana than women therefore the colour scheme used is polysemic as it can mean different things towards different peoples interpretations another intepretation for example could be that because the magazine is published in April it could be argued that they are going with the spring theme i also believe the age group target are likely to be around 16-25 as they are more likely to listen rap/Hip-hop music and the fact that they are using fairly young artists would also suggest they are expecting younger people to know about these artists unlike the older generation who are unlikely to listen to rap/Hip-hop as they may not like the image portrayed by rappers or the language used in rap/Hip-hop music in general therefore it is targeting a younger audience and i also believe it is targeting this age group as smoking marijuana is heavily associated with this age group and also teenage sub-culture therefore they use this subject to try and intise younger people to buy this magazine.
The magazine cover used by The Source also contains a speech bubble saying cover 2 of 3 this would suggest that the magazine makers are aiming to cater for diffrent audiences aswell so therefore the magazine may not be fully aimed towards men as one of the other cover may be aimed towards women rather than men to get both sexes to buy the magazine although the image projected on this front cover would suggest it is aiming towards men.

Gucci Mane Magazine Cover

In 1997, XXL was founded by a former Source staffer as well as others who wanted to create their own magazine based on the hip-hop music and culture genre developed by the founders of The Source it is published by Harris Publications. I am able to tell that the magazine is a hip-hop magazine due to the main image which is of Gucci Mane who is a Hip-hop/ Rap artist also through other factors such as the selling lines which one of them says 'does it hurt rappers or help when they are locked up' this shows that the magazine is mainly about rap/hip-hop and also if you still were unsure that this was a rap/hip-hop magazine above the title it says Hip-hop on a higher level.
I can tell that this magazine is aimed more towards men than women through the main image which is a picture of Gucci Mane who has lots of tattoos projecting a bad boy image which is what men are more likely to be interested in as it is stereotypical for rappers to have tattoos also the fact that Gucci Mane has lots of Jewellery would also be aiming more towards men as most rappers have lots of jewellery aswell this would also suggest that Gucci Mane is very sucessful for example as he can afford to have 3 diffrent watches which look expensive on one arm. The colour scheme combined with the main image projects a sense of danger for example the fact that the title is red and that the main image is showing all of Gucci Mane's tattoos projects a sense of danger which is more likely to appeal more to men than women i also believe the age group target are likely to be around 16-25 as they are more likely to listen rap/Hip-hop music and the fact that they are using fairly young artists would also suggest they are expecting younger people to know about these artists unlike the older generation who are unlikely to listen to rap/Hip-hop as they may not like the image portrayed by rappers or the language used in rap/Hip-hop music in general therefore it is targeting a younger audience.
